BACCHANAL BLANKET
BACCHANAL (VICTORY OF PAN) 100% ORGANIC COTTON WOVEN BLANKET LIMITED EDITION of 100
AfterThe Triumph of Pan by Nicolas Poussin. Painted in a naive post-impressionist style reminiscent of Henri Rousseau, the composition of this painting is highly centralised like a stage performance, with the revelers arranged in a tight-knit group around the armless statue of the horned ancient Greek deity, Pan.
FURTHER READING
The motley crew of revelers depicted here are the members of Pan’s entourage, the maenads, centaurs, nymphs, and their lewd and horny playmates; the satyrs. A world of pagan imaginings is brought to life with a naive yet seductive charm.
The Bacchanalia were the original raves. Roman festivals of Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine, freedom, intoxication, and ecstasy. They were based on the Greek Dionysia and the Dionysian mysteries reserved only initiates with mystical purposes.
The Dionysia or bacchanals were held in the spring, after the last stages of the fermentation of wine, just after the winter solstice, it was a celebration of rebirth, of the earth awakening after winter and the first leaves appearing on the vine. These ceremonies were rituals in which participants ingested intoxicating substances to induce a trance state.
Worshipers consumed copious amounts of alcohol in order to remove their inhibitions so they could return to their most natural and instinctive state. Once the inhibition vanished, people would engage in free dancing and revel in sexual activities.
The importance of the ritual wasn’t focused on sexual activities but on what they represented: honouring the gods, the cycles of nature, and the return to humanity’s animalistic state.
