To be, implies not to be. Light cannot exist without shadow, and for every action, there is an equal opposite reaction. Many forms of dualism are common notions throughout world cultures.

The Balinese believe that there are two opposing forces that are required to maintain universal balance and they call this philosophical concept ‘Rwa Bhineda’.

Rwa Bhineda literally means ‘two opposites’. The Balinese believe that everything exists as a duality. It is this duality that brings a cosmic balance to the universe. So, if there is good in the world, evil must exist to bring balance. Birth balances death, joy balances sorrow, young balances old, positive balances negative, health balances sickness, and so forth. The universe constantly adjusts itself to bring about the perfect equilibrium. It is similar to the more familiar concept of yin-yang in Taoism.

To symbolise Rwa Bhineda in everyday life, the Balinese often use the metaphor of Barong and Rangda. The Eternal Battle Between Good and Evil. Rangda symbolises evil while Barong symbolises good. From a young age, the Balinese are taught tolerance as Rwa Bhineda places emphasis on appreciating differences, rather than antagonising them.

“Man is always bound so long as he depends for his happiness on a partial experience; joy must always give way to sorrow, otherwise, it can never be known as joy.” — Alan watts
