• A reworked and translated painting from the 17th century.

The “Danse Macabre,” also known as the “Dance of Death,” emerged from medieval plays and pagan folk rituals, intertwining itself within the annals of history. This morbid ballet portrays Death as a skeletal maestro, engaging in a dance with representatives of the social class hierarchy—Pope, emperor, king, lawyer, peasant—one by one, waltzing them away to their demise. It serves as a macabre reminder that neither lofty status nor humble origins can shield anyone from the inevitable grasp of death.

  • In the hushed canvas of a Balinese landscape, a genre painting emerges, capturing the poetry of everyday Balinese village life with the brushstrokes of magical realism, painted after the artist Walter Spies.

Native foliage and palm trees stand as silent witnesses; the scene unfolds in monochrome splendour, a lament to simpler times. The stage is set at sunset, with long shadows cast across the landscape. In this tapestry of light and dark, diligent farmers move like shadows, tending to their animals. Round hills unfurl like ancient scrolls, rolling off into the distant unknown. On the horizon, the majestic Mount Gunung Agung, stands sentinel, a sacred giant in the fading light. • The Greek gods stand apart in their apparent infallibility, yet they are often depicted as being marred by jealousy, wrath, and vengeance—an imperfection rooted in reality and moral complexities. The story of ‘Argus with one hundred eyes’ is one among many Greek myths. Argus, a giant from Argolis in the Peloponnese, had a body adorned with 100 eyes and was believed to never sleep. The explanation for his constant wakefulness lay in the ingenious design of his many eyes; only a fraction would slumber at a time, ensuring eternal watchfulness. By Stevie Anderson, 2023.
