FURTHER READING
The “Danse Macabre,” also known as the “Dance of Death,” emerged from medieval plays and pagan folk rituals, intertwining itself within the annals of history. This morbid ballet portrays Death as a skeletal maestro, engaging in a dance with representatives of the social class hierarchy—Pope, emperor, king, lawyer, peasant—one by one, waltzing them away to their demise. It serves as a macabre reminder that neither lofty status nor humble origins can shield anyone from the inevitable grasp of death.
In the early days of printed books in the 14th century, the Dance of Death was initially published as a series of woodcuts, with each scene etched separately. Hans Holbein’s vivid woodcuts acted as whispers in the wind, spreading this haunting dance across Europe. Those who beheld this somber spectacle did so one episode at a time, as they turned the pages of the printed work.
Come the seventeenth century... the dance raged on! Artists painted and etched versions of the Dance of Death, now capturing all episodes within a single frame. Skulls, clocks and bones were also added to the vista. These themes from the Vanitas (Latin for ‘vanity’) movement symbolise the transient ephemeral nature of life. In this panting the alchemical sun replaces Jesus.
