Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Asia, and Africa. From Japan to China and across the islands of Southeast Asia there are many tales of the aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. 

Underneath the glare of an erupting volcano as magma spews into the night, a sailor encounters a haggard yet beguiling mermaid on the shores of a mystical island, from a forgotten past. The pair are backlit by the distant eruption as they sit beneath spider-like trees and the sailor filled by palm wine is undeterred by the human bones, he reaches out to the mermaid who looks shocked or bemused by the encounter.
