ALAS WAYAH JACQUARD WOVEN COTTON CHORE JACKET LIMITED EDITION of 100

Alas wayah means- old jungle, in Bahasa Balinese language. This colourful painting features characters from Balinese folklore such as Memedi and Tanya.

The Tanya are the spirits that inhabit the rivers and ravines. It is said that they are very active during the day when they take on a human appearance in the villages.

FURTHER READING

Memedi are red-eyed humanoids who live in tall, big trees and bamboo groves near the villages. It is also said that they steal children when the sun goes down.Balinese parents have been known to tell badly behaved children that the Memedi will take them, if they are not good.

In Bali everything has its place and the world is held in a constant balance between light and dark. In order to create a harmony between the human and the spirit worlds good and evil forces are both revered.

However with the rapid development of Bali, the nature spirits are dislocated from their natural homes and compressed into smaller spaces. This creates an imbalance in the supernatural world: the human takes the environment of the spirits, especially around rivers and forests that are their roads and homes.

In this verdant jungle scene, alive with life, vibrant flowers and psychedelic foliage flow into human and animal forms. The inseparable fractals of the natural world suggest the notion that perhaps we are not separate from nature... but part of it.
