VARGAS JACQUARD KNIT JUMPER
VARGAS JACQUARD KNIT JUMPER in MOHAIR WOOL LIMITEED EDITION
A nod to Henri Matisse’s painting ‘The Music’ (La Musique, 1910) and an ode to Chavela Vargas, a household name in Mexico and one of the most passionate performers of the last century.
A quiet, but powerful character plays the guitar amongst a wall of red flowers; she is draped in a geometric poncho- offset by intricate white and yellow patterns.
FURTHER READING
The bohemian Vargas, was famous for her unique and moving delivery of traditional, Mexican ranchera music. Vargas was a revolutionary who ushered in a new ranchera style. She sang la canción Mexicana, or Mexican popular music — mostly songs about love and heartbreak (usually told from the man’s perspective — she didn’t bother to switch out the pronouns). She changed the way ranchera music was performed by taking liberties with the tempo, melodies and lyrics. Vargas succeeded as a musician with no formal training and performed in some of the most renowned venues around the world.
Not only one of Mexico’s most powerful musical exports of the 20th Century, the openly lesbian Chevela also became an icon of the LGBTQ community in South America and Spain.
She was Frieda Kahlo’s lover for a time, among countless others, and prided herself on seducing the wives of political and business leaders, not to mention being able to out-drink any man who dared spend an evening at a bar with her and a bottle of tequila.
Vargas claimed to have a mystical relationship with the spirit of the Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca. She used to say she would converse with him at night in her room at the famous Residencia de Estudiantes, where she stayed when she was in Madrid. Chavela also became a muse for director Pedro Almodóvar, since he first began making films in the mid-1980s.
Chavela was one of the leaders of cultural change worldwide during the sixties. A true maverick of the human spirit, trailblazer, and door opener for women and all genders.
